New Cards: Genesect and Genesect EX Revealed!

For the first time, we are seeing Genesect in the Pokémon TCG! Apparently it will be released in the Megalo-Cannon set in Japan, which is a few sets ahead of the rest of the world. Here’s a picture and the translations underneath. Credit to Poké for the image.

Genesect – Grass – HP100
Basic Pokemon

[C] Call for Family: Search your deck for a Basic Grass Pokemon and put it onto your Bench. Shuffle your deck afterward.
[G][G][C] Jet Impact: 80 damage. Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 20 more damage.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Genesect-EX – Grass – HP170
Basic Pokemon

Ability: Red Signal
When you attach a Plasma Energy to this Pokemon from your hand, you may switch your opponent’s Active Pokemon with 1 of his or her Benched Pokemon.

[G][G][C] Megalo Cannon: 100 damage. Does 20 damage to one of your opponent’s Benched Pokemon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance when damaging the Bench.)

When Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

What do you think? Personally I find Genesect very intriguing because we’ve known that it existed since Black & White was released, but just now we’re starting to get cards for it. It’s like Pokémon’s best kept secret.

If it wasn’t grass, it would be binder fodder…BUT SINCE IT IS GRASS HMMMMMMMMMMM *ponders*

I don’t think this will be a big deal vs. Keldeo/Blastoise decks now with their Black Kyurems. The fact that it has no water resistance, requires 2 grass, and no form of energy accel kind of hurts, along with it’s incompatibility with colress in terms of it’s ability.

I think Genesect EX might be somewhat good down the line, maybe it could be paired with the Porygon Z that is in the same set as it that lets you move plasma energy, so maybe those 2 guys and then some plasma/colorless pokemon, just a thought

unless there is a way to energy accel some grass, or be able to surprise scramble switch and take out a keldeo ex…but that dang black kyurem is too much of a beast to let genesect get over on it. only time will tell

    Finally, a decent grass attacker.
First off, that ability is insanely good and makes Genesect at least semi-viable. He has good retreat and the best weakness.
I think it could be a deck. Use it with Ho-Oh for energy excel, or just Etherdex and Colress Machine it. A lot of cards, sure, but it stops the Keldeo/Blastoise deck cold. Or pair it with Lugia EX and Bouffalant if you want mono energy.
And then I just realized that the metagame will be completely different. I’d love it if it came out in Thunder Knuckle, but if we aren’t getting it until after Worlds, then it’s really hard to say what it will do. Still like that ability though.

Etherdex isn’t reliable. Ho-oh vs a blastoise keldeo deck on your bench isn’t good. With colress you still need two turns of manual grass attach. It will have problems against black kyurem. And I don’t like it’s ability because the last thing we need is more ways to catcher things.

  7. xniglle

it could go in hydreigon if that is still playable

  8. rayTCGquaza

    Finally, anti-Keldeo cards

It also helps that it’s a built-in pokemon catcher

  9. Zander Bennett

Keldeo is no longer as broken. Still broken as heck, but at least it can be knocked out. Who knows maybe Grass isn’t bad after all.

I find Genesect EX really interesting. It’s attack is basically Night Spear with 10 extra damage to the active and 10 less to the bench. It’s Ability is also amazing, ESPECIALLY once Catcher rotates. However, the lack of a Dark Patch-like Item or Eel-like energy accelerator makes it hard to make proper use of. I could see this as a tech in Thundurus/Deoxys for sure, especially with Scramble Switch around. I could even see a build using Victini EX to accelerate the energy on the first turn, then useing Exp. Share to preserve that energy the rest of the game. Victini EX is has such low HP, though.

I like that the ability doesn’t work with colress, and that the type/damage forces you to use plasma support like Frozen City/Deoxys EX to make the best use of the card. It doesnt feel like Mewtwo/Tornadus/Landorus/Darkrai where they are entirely self suffiecent, or like Keldeo/Black Kyurem/Raikou where the only support they need is energy acceleration. It feels anti-Keldeo, Promo plasma and generally balanced, a good direction for the game IMO. Tech ho-ohs also miss the ko by 10, so only ho-oh in hypnobank decks, and the hype-popular Anti-Klang Victini really threaten his Fire weakness.

Why is everybody so happy for a Keldeo EX counter? We have Garbodor for that…

    1. Jacob Dudzik

      You re absoulty right

  13. Johnnathan Rose

you guys do realize that this is only the third card out of the megalo cannon set? There could be something behind why the people in Japan did Genesect how they did him.

  14. Aaron Minjoot

    Three words: Grass type EX.

More than enough to make me satisfied with it.

personally the first thing that come to mind is a keldeo ex counter. however its ability just doesnt work with the engine of team plasma pokemon. Also its a grass type ex. the organized play are trying to make us all play emboar. is that what you want. no because keldeo ex blastoise is far better than emboar. Anyways Its attack does kind of remind us of darkrai. i say if we see a card like grass patch and grass claw i would see this card being good. one last thing 170HP, Darkrai eats this thing. I rate this card 5/10. As for the other genosect it is a great partner with genosect ex but same problem. weak to fire.
