2013 Worlds Qualifier: Martina Canto

Here we have our first female Worlds qualifier in Masters for 2013, Martina Canto! She is a 19 year old player from Italy who is no stranger to competing at the World Championships. Let’s hear what she has to say!

Congratulations on your invite to Worlds! How did you earn your points?

I’ve earned 52 points at Autumn Battle Roads (two 1st place, one 2nd place and one 3rd place), 130 points at CC (one 1st place and two 2nd place) and 340 points at Regionals (one 2nd place, two 5th place and one 3rd place).

For those who may not know you, can you tell us a bit about your history in the game?

I’ve played since I was 8 years old. I won 1 Italian National in Juniors in 2004, 1 Italian National in Seniors in 2008 and a lot of Top 8 in Masters division at National. I’ve played at Worlds since 2004 (except for 2006). And I’ve made a lot of good placement in Italy’s torunaments, but not at Worlds xD

What has been your favorite deck to use this season? What have you been using currently?

My favorite deck was Darkrai Hydreigon because I was waiting for it since I saw Hydreigon in Japan. Because of the strange format in this year I played a lot of decks, starting from Darkrai Hydreigon to Empoleon, Keldeo and Big Basics. Best results with Empoleon, Darkrai Hydreigon and a rogue deck, Darkrai Tornadus.

What do you attribute your success to this season?

Test, Test, and Test….. And luck with the pairings in some tournaments.

How do you feel about the current state of the game?

I think the format is like “Rock-Paper-Scissors” because all the decks are strong, but it depends about the metagame in a single tournament (and pairings). For example, I played Darkrai Tornadus in a Regional and got 2nd place. The same deck I played one week later got 2-3…

What are your plans now that you have your invite?

My National will be really more relaxed for me now xD I think I’m going to plan the holidays in Canada.

What do you enjoy most about the Pokémon TCG?

Friends! Because you can meet a lot of people from different countries and this is a really good thing.

Do you have any hobbies besides Pokémon?

I read Mangas and watch other Animes.

Is there anything else you’d like to say to our readers?

Hope to see you all in Vancouver! 😀

There you have it! Hopefully this interview allowed you to learn a little bit more about a player from a country that doesn’t get too much exposure when it comes to the Pokémon TCG. Thanks to Martina for taking the time to answer our questions, and we hope to hear from her again soon!
