2013 Klaczynski Open – Details Inside!

Klaczynski Open

We here at The Top Cut are excited to announce that the Pokémon TCG will have its first major unsanctioned tournament in the game’s history, the 2013 Klaczynski Open! Hosted by two-time World Champion Jason Klaczynski, this event will feature a great atmosphere, an easily accessible venue, and big prizes. Surely this will be a historic moment for Pokémon, so don’t miss out!

Taking place at the beautiful Tinley Park Convention Center in Tinley Park, IL, the Klaczynski Open is in a centralized location near multiple airports and highways. The event will take place over Labor Day weekend (August 31st and September 1st), a perfect time to enjoy some non-stop Pokémon fun. Players of all ages are welcome. In fact, kids 14 & under will have their own separate tournament to make the weekend enjoyable for the whole family!

Of course, The Top Cut is very pleased that an event like this is happening. For the past few years, we’ve done anything we can to promote the Pokémon TCG and make it grow. As such, we will be streaming the event live for those who can’t make it! In addition, we will be providing playmats as prizes for the Top 8 in the Main Event and for the finalists in the 14 & under event. The winner of the Main Event also receives an invitation to play in the 2014 Top Cut Invitational, a chance to duke it out with the game’s best! We know this event is going to be a huge success, and we want to be a part of it.

For full details about the event, be sure to visit the event’s website. Here are some of the major details.

What does it cost to enter?

With such a great venue and big prizes on the line, there will be an entry fee for the tournament. For those who register online until July 15th, you can sign up for the Main Event at a discounted rate of $30! After that, the event will be $40 to enter. Tickets at the door will be $45 if tickets are available still. The earlier you sign up, the better!

For the 14 & under event, registration until July 15th will be $20. After that, the cost will be $30 online and $35 at the door if tickets are available still.

Is there anything different about this tournament?

Instead of regular single game Swiss rounds, the Klaczynski Open will be using a best 2-of-3 format for these preliminary rounds! By doing this, there is less emphasis on first turn wins and losing a game because of one unlucky hand. More games means more opportunities to show off your skill. With 75 minute time limits + 3 turns, there will be ample time to complete the rounds. For the Top 8 matches, there will be 90 minutes + 3 turns to complete the rounds.

Will The Top Cut be there?

Yes! While all members may not be able to make it, we are sure to have most of our crew in attendance. Feel free to say hi! We may do a meet and greet event to sign autographs for anyone interested as well!

If you have any further questions, be sure to visit the event’s website.

Please spread the word about this great event! If we can reach enough people, events like these will cause the game to grow into something bigger and better. If this tournament is a success, more like it will follow. Maybe one day this can turn into an independent tournament circuit for everyone to enjoy. But it can’t happen without your support! Thanks, and see you there!

Congratulations. It’s a welcomed event. The more competitive events there are, the more interest it awakens everywhere. I too live far in South Florida, but I would love to attend. I know it will be a big success.

  3. Kenneth X Ecker

Yeah this sounds like a lot of fun. If I can make it out, I’ll definitely participate!

Sounds awesome! What will the format be?

    1. Kyle Sucevich

The format will be whatever the current Modified format is at the time. Unless they announce a rotation, it will be Black & White to Plasma Blast.

  5. Tanya Croxton

Alex & Jonathan are so excited about this tournament. They are as excited about it as Nationals & Worlds!

      Are you their mum?
Anyway, tell Alex well done on top 8 KO.

This is seriously awesome. It is really a big deal, and its importance can’t be understated. I’ve been wanting something like this to really help the game. I mean there are so many MTG leagues outside of officially sanctioned magic tournaments like the Star City Games league tournaments that it is really an awesome support for the game. I’ll be booking my ticket soon.

So will this be Dark Explorers On? Can’t wait!

    1. Alabrel

NXD-on is the official next format, and the KO will be following suit.

  8. Zurthon

    Wow, what a tournament!

Is it a 45$ fee just to get in? Like if you dont intend on playing in the main event and just want to come for drafts and whatnot?

    1. Kyle Sucevich

Nope, you don’t have to pay anything to attend the event. The fee is just for the main event. There will be side events going on throughout Sunday, though!

Will there be another one of these this year? Also if you are 14 or under can you choose to play in the masters tournament?
