Tournament Round Structure for 2013-14 Season

Official information about the number of rounds at events this season has been released! Since all events will cut to a Top 8 maximum, there have been some changes in how Swiss rounds work. Also keep in mind they are Best-of-3, 50 minute rounds. Let’s take a look.

Cities, States, and Small Regionals

Attendance Swiss Rounds Top Cut
8 3 Rounds None (Swiss only)
9-12 4 Rounds Top 4
13-20 5 Rounds Top 4
21-32 5 Rounds Top 8
33-64 6 Rounds Top 8
65-128 7 Rounds Top 8
129-226 8 Rounds Top 8

Large Regionals and Nationals

Attendance Swiss Rounds Day 2 Top Cut
8 3 Rounds None None (Swiss only)
9-16 5 Rounds None Top 4
17-32 5 Rounds None Top 8
33-64 6 Rounds None Top 8
65-128 7 Rounds None Top 8
129-226 8 Rounds None Top 8
227-409 9 Rounds X-2 or T32 (whichever is greater) play 5 rounds Top 8
410-799 9 Rounds X-2 or T32 (whichever is greater) play 5 rounds Top 8
800 or higher 9 Rounds (2 flights) X-2 or T32 (whichever is greater) play 6 rounds Top 8

Looks like there will be a lot more Swiss rounds at the larger events! This will compensate for the smaller cut. It will be interesting to see how this season plays out!

Note the 227-409 is really the most relevant information for next weekend. Until this gets published in documents, some of the other data points may change.
