Mega Evolution Mechanic and Scans from X & Y!

Like everyone expected, Mega Evolutions are coming to the Pokémon TCG! But the question is simple. How do they work? Initial reports say that Mega Evolutions can be played onto Pokémon-EX to become even bigger and stronger. However, the catch is that Mega Evolving ends your turn, so it comes at a cost. As the set is released, we’ll receive more details. What do you think about this mechanic? Tell us down in the comments! Also, here are some scans along with the official press release. Enjoy!

Pokémon TCG: XY Introduces Mega Evolution to Extremely Powerful Pokémon-EX Cards

New Mega Evolution Game Mechanic Will Revolutionize Pokémon TCG Strategy

BELLEVUE, WA—October 15, 2013—Mega Evolution, what could be described as an Evolution beyond all Evolutions, is changing the landscape of battles in the recently launched Pokémon X and Pokémon Y video games for the Nintendo 3DS. This revolutionary game mechanic is also coming to the brand-new Pokémon Trading Card Game: XY expansion when 10-card booster packs arrive at retail in North America on February 5, 2014. Mega Evolution Pokémon evolve from Pokémon-EX, extremely powerful cards in their own right, creating a force that will change the way Pokémon TCG players build decks and create strategies for battle.

Before players Mega Evolve a Pokémon like Venusaur-EX or Blastoise-EX, they must consider the situation carefully because doing so ends their turn immediately, which means they can’t attack. The risky move is worth the reward, however, because Mega Evolution Pokémon exhibit a strength that surpasses Pokémon-EX. Hard-hitting attacks and high HP totals make Mega Evolution Pokémon dominant during Pokémon TCG matches.

Look out for the Pokémon TCG: XY expansion, including powerful Pokémon-EX cards, on February 5, 2014. The Pokémon TCG: XY—Kalos Starter Set, featuring new Fairy-type Pokémon, the first Pokémon type in the Pokémon TCG to have resistance to Darkness-type Pokémon, launches November 8, 2013. Each XY—Kalos Starter Set deck and XY booster pack will include a code card that unlocks virtual cards for the Pokémon TCG Online.

Obviously we have to wait and see how strong these cards are. both in terms of HP and attacks. But at first blush I am questioning the viability of mega evolutions. Players will already have to figure out a way to make room for these cards in their deck, which makes it less appealing than basic EXs. But the fact that you are most likely going to give your opponent a free attack when you play makes it even more risky.

Considering the new rule changes and the Catcher errata, i think it’s not that bad to skip one attack to evolve a Ex into a mega-evolution…but it all depends on the streanght of those mega-evolutions.
That Blastoise will definetly get a Megaevolution, and if it’s viable to use in a Blastoise/Keldeo deck, there is a chance that Blastoise/Blastoise Ex might become a huge deck in the upcoming metagame…

So Yveltal-EX’s attack is exactly like Mewtwo-EX’s X Ball, but even stronger by adding 20? That’s really going to help Darkrai decks if it can survive the mega evolutions.

I believe Yveltal EX’s attack is weaker than Mewtwo EX as it does 20+ 10 for each energy attached to both active pokemons. If both active pokemons have 2 energy each, that attack will do 60 instead of Mewtwo’s 80. That is, if I’m reading the description correct as it is kind of unclear.

      1. F0NTAINE

It’s 20 for each energy total, not 20 for each shared across.

It’s going to be especially powerful with Hydreigon. Keldeo EX just used Secret Sword for 110? NP, let me just Dark Trance 4 energy to Yveltal-EX with a Dark Claw and one shot your Keldeo with no drawback. Oh, you can either KO your opponent with Y Cyclone or not KO at all? Just use Y Cyclone to send an Energy to the bench after, in case you lose your Yveltal you save an energy on the field. You don’t lose your Yveltal, just Dark Trance it back!

So Evil Ball is pretty much the same as Mewtwo EX’s X Ball then, but why is it 20 plus not 20 times.

          1. Kyle Sucevich

            It’s X-Ball + 20 basically.

          2. Ian Williams

OK thanks, that’s what I thought.

Well definitely it is good with darkrai, but it’s far from game breaking. It differs from mewtwo in one crucial place, versatility. Yveltal only works in darkrai hydrogen, because it is reliant on dark energy, whereas you can pretty much slap a mewtwo into any deck list with extra room and use it. Also mewtwo was printed in a time when it was pretty much the only good ex card available. It wasn’t really until darkrai that we saw another usable card, and you still would use it with mewtwo.

I like the mega pokemon cards

  4. C-Dub

So will cards like sigilyph DRX and Bouff DRX that have abilities that affect EX pokemon work on the mega-evolution pokemon that evolve from EXs? Anybody know?

    1. Tandran

Probably not. They will more than likely be “Mega” or something similar rather than EX. We will have to wait and see to be sure but it will more than liekly come down to wording in the card text, but I’m sure that they will still be worth 2 prizes at least since they are supposed to be more powerful than EXs.

  5. Tim

Sad that of all 4 Ex, I’m only interested in this yveltal, badass art on that xerneas though, perhaps fairy has some place in the TCG

  6. Deathbydragon

The big question is, can you do it on the first turn? If so, then there is really no downside to it, as you cannot attack anyway. Also, the mega evolution cards really have to have HP higher than 200 to really stand up to today’s meta game, which can hand out 200 damage attacks pretty readily, with both black kyurem and genesect able to do it flat out

Is it just me or does Yveltal Evil Ball says 20+ but in the description it says 20 times
