Announcement: The Top Cut Shutting Down

For those who don’t know, I have accepted a position at The Pokémon Company International. In a lot of ways, it’s a dream come true. Instead of working an ordinary desk job, my occupation will be my passion. I get to do Pokémon-related work every day! On top of that, I have an opportunity to help the game I love from the inside of the company. To put it simply, I am extremely excited about what lies ahead.

Unfortunately, taking this opportunity means that I will have to step down from The Top Cut.

When we started The Top Cut in 2011, things like event coverage, game footage, and live streams hardly existed; we changed that. Our streams gave people access to live tournament action, our YouTube channel provided games with professional commentary, and our event coverage brought attention to successful players and strategies. On top of that, we provided entertainment and the materials to help players improve their skills. Without a doubt, we broke new ground and paved the way for the future. I am extremely proud of what we accomplished.

Over these past four years, the effort I put into The Top Cut was extremely rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade my experience in for anything. But the time has come to leave it behind. For the foreseeable future, this will be the end of The Top Cut. Existing content will continue to be available, but new YouTube videos and all other content will stop being produced.

I truly appreciate any fans who have supported us, said a kind word, or simply watched one of our videos. From Bad Deck Monday to the World Championships, every moment was important to me. Thank you.

Although I won’t be able to compete or make content anymore, I will be able to provide commentary at the big tournaments. I will keep attending events when I can. My involvement with the Pokémon TCG will continue to be strong; it just will be in a different way now.

As I leave The Top Cut behind, my only request is for you to support the community members and groups who put the effort into growing the game. Please show your love to the following:

On the Bubble
Team Fish Knuckles
The Charizard Lounge
Six Prizes
60 Cards
A Roll of the Dice
PTCG Radio
And, of course, Pokemon.com

Thank you for four great years. It was a great run.

    Congratulations man, well deserved! ^_^

First I thought it was April 1st, but then I saw that it wasn’t, and now I’m sad. We won’t get to see your opinions on the new set, or cheer for you to do well at worlds and nationals. But in the end this is a big deal, congratulations! Make the most of it!

  3. Manu Valencia

Gratz Kyle and besides this is a sad new for me cuz ur one of my greatest inspirations to start a website like these with my friends im really happy for u! go pooka!

  4. Ibun West

I had been curious why there hadn’t been many uploads to the youtube channel in recent weeks. Guess that explains why. Congrats on your new position though! Definitely deserved. Your passion for Pokemon is practically unrivaled, and your TCG videos were some of the best content on youtube. Definitely looking forward to hearing you commentate the tournaments though!

  5. Carlos

With The Top Cut, you showed TPCi that more was possible, instead of just criticizing. As a result, you created the opportunity to work for them yourself, and bring all of their resources and weight of the brand to your effort and ideas. Congratulations on leveling up.

  6. Andrew

Kyle, all I can say is congratulations on how far you’ve come! Although I’ve only followed TTC for about 2 years, TTC was the entire reason I became interested in the competitive aspect of the PTCG. I truly would like to thank you for that, and I know that you will do amazing work at this new job! Thank you for everything!

Dream come true Kyle you deserve it mate. Best of luck.

  8. Ian Fotheringham aka NoPoke

Congratulations.. can’t wait to find out what your new role is going to be .

While it’s sad to see this site and your youtube presence go, I feel this is a blessing and reason for celebration! Kyle, your influence is massive on the card game scene, and now you can do far greater things for the game and influence real change and guidance in an official capacity. I’m happy for you and the community of players as a whole, because this is the beginning of a fantastic thing – and kudos to PCI for making this genius decision. While I’ll miss your incite from a player’s perspective, I know that you will be of far more use to all of us from the inside of the company. Show them why you’re a champion on the playing table as well as in the hearts of your fans!

Good luck in the future, you’re a legend

Congrats!! This is great to hear. Thank you for everything you have done for the game. You’ve been a great role model for our young kids and some of us adults. You should be proud!! Again thank you for everything and good luck in your new endeavor!!

    Congratulations Kyle.
I have a lot of emotions right now.
I don’t know if I can really adequetly describe how much of an incredible character you really are. I don’t know if I should even try. There is no one more suited for this epic role, in the world, than you. After all the work, all the years, all the (honestly, no doubt) tears.. It is culminating in this: a launch into an entirely new realm, a higher realm where your passion has many more resources through which it can positively affect the world of Pokemon, and truly the world Pokemon exists in.
Your presence as a player putting forth revolutionary content will be sorely missed, but this must be incredibly fulfilling for you, and it is exciting for “us players” to know we’ll finally have a personal connection to the Big Man Upstairs of Pokemon.
Well, enough of me making you sound like the Jesus of Pokemon, haha.
May your thoughtful demeanor and gentle soul continue to shine and touch the lives of others, as you clearly have with mine.
    Love,
    Skyler

Congratulations Kyle. I know you will do great working at TPCi. Now you can finally know the things ahead of time instead of guessing though! (even though you can’t tell us) Are you going to officially commentate at all the big tournaments now? Great 4 years and good luck.

TTC will be missed for sure, but this is just so amazing and you will continue to do such great things for the community as a whole. I don’t think I can congratulate you enough–I can only imagine how you must be feeling now. You’re an inspiration to us all that we can fulfill any of our dreams with enough hard work and dedication!

Once again, thank you Kyle, “Crimz”, “Pram”, Ben, and Drew. You will be missed, and I owe much of my passion of the TCG to you guys.

  22. Zachary Siddiq

By the way, any chance I can still order a traditional Top Cut, red and black playmat?

  30. Ross Gilbert

    Cheers for everything dude :)

No love for PTCGRadio though in your list of people to keep an eye on? That makes me sad!

  31. SheepinSpace

Hey Pooka, I’m all over the place about these news. On one hand, it makes me really sad to know that there won’t be any video of yours, anymore. I started checking the Pokemon TCG because my son got me into it in 2013, but my real involvement began when (soon after) I got to know your website and to watch your awesome videos. They have always been informative, fun and very interesting and enjoyable. You stroke a balance that’s hard to achieve, and I thank you immensely for all that.
On the other hand, I’m really happy for you: good luck, I wish you all the best!
    Cheers!
    Marcello, from Italy

  32. gpod11601

Pooka, thank you for the great videos! Although I haven’t been into the competitive game for long, you are the reason I kept in the competitive side. Thanks you very much, thanks for the vids, the humor, and the fun! 😀 I wish you the best of luck in your new job, and I hope you’ll be able to make lots of new comentations in the near future. Thanks again, may the Lord be with you 😀

  33. Luke

Is this an April Fools joke?

    1. pokemontoya

      He announced it days ago…

  34. -

As sad as it is for you to be going you deserve all you get for the effort and passion you have put into Top Cut. The videos are invaluable to both old and new players. Good Luck.

  35. Mikey

    Congrats Pooka on the opportunity!

It was with your content and knowledge which helped me become a better TCG player. I could always depend on TTC to provide great ideas to help improve my game and decks. You were always fun to watch in each video. Just by watching your videos, I was able to learn more about the TCG and see the decks that other people talk about being used and learn much more about these decks.

It is your videos and site that inspired me to write my own TCG column to help new players and veterans gain an understanding of the Pokemon TCG. May it be by showcasing a certain card or showing off a deck via a video that you or other players put up.

You have left a great impression on anybody who watched your videos and clearly Pokemon made a great decision to bringing you aboard their staff.

  36. Victor

If Pooka have any say in the pokemon “strategy” creation process in the pokemon company… PLEASE just tell them to stop making useless common pokemon……

We don’t want to open a pack and get lot of useless pokemon……. All the pokemon card is print on a piece of paper…. there is no really value to…the printer.. so at least stop wasting people and money……with useless common pokemon card.

Aside from that, Best of luck in your job Pooka.

  37. Nylon

“As long as the game exists, Pooka says he will continue to play; he grew
up with Pokémon and wants to see it grow into something great”
Taken from your profile on this site. That’s strange, isn’t it?

  38. Dave

Thanks for everything you guys have done. You have definitely added to my enjoyment of the game. Best of luck Kyle!

  39. Joe

What a sad end for a site fast approaching its fifth birthday to shut its doors so quickly.

Aside from all of the congratulations and praise for Kyle, heres some real talk:

The TopCut never realized its full potential because the other members besides Kyle did not pull their weight in producing content or being active on this website. Kyle did EVERYTHING and he was extremely selfless when he always shared the praise for this site’s success with the other members even though they did not deserve it. Kyle is just a really nice guy. Considering that none of the other “members” will step up and take over, Kyle should consider selling the site or letting someone take over for free who is young, knowledgeable, and passionate for the game. The TopCut was truly one of the best (if not the best) pokemon fan site/strategy domain around. Sixprizes is comparable in quality but lacks many of the fundamental qualities that Kyle created with this site. I hope it doesn’t just die off like Kyle described.

It was pretty noticeable over the last year or so that Kyle was “growing out” of being a hardcore competitive player who has the time and money to travel around to events. He grew up, graduated college, had less free time, got a girlfriend, and found a job. Such is life growing up and moving away from pokemon. Kyle and I are roughly the same age and we both got into pokemon during the “boom” years in the late 90s and early 2000s with Pokemon Red/Blue for the gameboy and Base Set for the trading card game. I understand why he started moving away from the game and is now on the “other side” of the equation working for PCI.

I got back into pokemon in 2012 after stumbling onto this website’s content and I watched some of the podcasts. I could never get into the actual physical trading card game competitive play because I am a grown adult (like Kyle is now) with responsibilities and I simply don’t have the time to travel around to play a card game. With that said, I got into PTCGO until the last 5-6 months when I finally decided to walk away due to it going nowhere and PCI not putting the time or resources into making it great. PTCGO has an incredible amount of potential and could be comparable to Hearthstone, but PCI simply doesn’t care enough to make it that good.

I don’t know exactly what Kyle’s job entails because he was a little vague on that. But I hope that he eventually has a say in how the game is made and the potential that PTCGO has. If PCI ever decides to invest the adequate amount of time into the system and develops large-scale tournaments, leaderboards, ect.. I would venture back to it because jumping on my computer is easy.

Good luck Kyle. I hope that you can advise PCI on what they need to do differently to fulfill its potential. They need lots of help. The game is improving at an anemic pace compared to how bad it was years ago with Big Basics dominating everything. I still don’t think they fully understand how to make a balanced card pool or anything else. Or maybe they do get it but they don’t care and they like cards like Seismatoad EX.

  41. Ken Rawson

Pooka, HUGE Congrats! I’m very grateful for The Top Cut. Hey, I can’t find it anywhere…What are you going to be doing for Pokemon? What is your “job description”? Sorry if this has already been asked/answered

  42. Elliot Marriott

I came here wondering why I hadn’t seen The Top Cut pop up on my YouTube subscriptions lately and I am saddened to discover why. But pleased for you, Kyle. I was proud to have designed for The Top Cut and I wish you well in your future. Now to re-watch old videos!

  43. Michael

Pooka, I had met you once, at the regionals in vancouver. I placed 16th overall. I feel like you made an effort to help cheer me up, and keep me going through to the next round. Thanks for that Pooka. It was great to meet you, and congratulations

  44. Luke Sams

Looks like the highly-piped Top Cut Invitational will not happen this year, or any year for that matter.

damn, gonna miss your vid’s, Pooka, but congrats!

    Dear Poka,

I would like to thank you personally for all the awesome Pokémon content you have made for the community. Pooka, be sure to ask the Pokemon Company for my input, I know a lot of things that will help the current formats and not make it too OP. I would LOVE to help signed, Ethan Bartiromo, Email me at, ethan.bartiromo@yahoo.com ! It would be a GREAT honor.
